Our Story
Welcome to The Yellow Submarine, a place where tradition meets taste, and where a simple idea has thrived for over five decades.
The Beginning
Our story began in 1971 when a gentleman from Boston set foot in San Francisco. He had a hankering for his favorite East Coast "grinders" and realized he couldn't find them anywhere in the city. That's when he decided to open a small deli on Irving Street, bringing a slice of Boston-style subs to the heart of San Francisco. Little did he know that this modest endeavor would turn into an enduring legacy.
A Family Takes the Helm
In 1975, the Naser family, led by Jack Naser, took over the reins of The Yellow Submarine. The family felt the pulse of the neighborhood's response to the hot sandwich deli, and rather than change a winning formula, they chose to embrace and preserve it. The philosophy was simple: "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." That decision set the course for the next several decades.
A Commitment to Quality
At The Yellow Submarine, we believe that quality is non-negotiable. Our sandwiches are more than just meals; they are a testament to the care and dedication we put into every ingredient. Whether it's hand-selecting the perfect cuts of beef for our top-selling steak sandwiches or crafting our unique house-made hot sauce, we do things the old-fashioned way because it's the right way.
Timeless Sandwiches
Our menu features classic Boston-style subs, hoagies, or grinders (whichever term you prefer) with generous portions and a wide array of toppings. The "the works" option ensures you can customize your sandwich to perfection. Our sandwiches are loaded and served on deliciously thick Italian rolls, creating a flavor explosion that's hard to resist.
A Place of Warmth and Tradition
The heart of The Yellow Submarine lies in its family-run essence. When you step into our deli, you'll feel the warmth of a community hub where family members and team members work seamlessly to create your perfect sandwich. It's not just a business; it's a labor of love. And this spirit extends to the community, where many of our loyal customers have become friends over the years.
A Hidden Gem
While we may not be featured on the "best of" lists, we thrive in the hearts of those who know us best. Even notable figures like Gavin Newsom and Danny Glover have enjoyed our sandwiches. Our spot may be hidden, but the flavors we offer are anything but.
Preserving the Legacy
In a city that's constantly evolving, The Yellow Submarine stands as a beacon of consistency. Our aim is to retain the old San Francisco vibe, continuing to serve mouthwatering sandwiches to the people of this beautiful city. Our legacy is one of quality, tradition, and an unassuming charm that keeps our regulars returning for more.
Thank you for being a part of our story. We invite you to experience the nostalgia and flavors of The Yellow Submarine and become a part of our extended family.
